ONLINE CURRICULUM LESSONS FOR GCSE FOOD & NUTRITION WITH VEGAN RECIPES
Let’s talk Digestion
So last week I wrote how and why I stopped eating meat. It was immediately after a Human Biology Lesson on Digestion. I was around 11 or 12 years old.
I’ve always enjoyed helping in the kitchen with cooking with my Mother from a very young age.
I began getting books from the library (before the internet) and searched for vegetarian recipes. There were not many vegetarian/vegan recipes around, so would create my own. I would make vegetarian cheesecake using cream cheese, and burgers from TVP, (textured vegetable protein) but I didn’t realise how cooking would bring out so much more creativity in me!
My Mother also stopped cooking ‘organs’ from animals like liver and kidneys after what I told her from my school lesson on digestion and I became the first vegetarian in my family. The topic of Digestion to this day, is still one of my favourite subjects that I’ve dedicated a whole Module on it in my Program. More about that soon!
The topic of digestion used to be taught in Home Economics and then it got taken out of the curriculum. I believe it should still be taught in schools in Food and Nutrition and Home Economics, so students can learn to appreciate their bodies and what they put into it.
If you, believe like me that Digestion should be taught, then here’s a video for your class. Enjoy!
